The Maryland State Championships (also called Greenbrier) was my first race of the season. I had no expectations and was curious about how my new training was going to affect my performance. I raced up because the mileage in the 13-14 was too short and I wanted a bigger challenge against the older girls and also the category two women. Of course the girls were the absolute last group to start (behind rows and rows of men) and I was anxious to hit the trail. The whistle blew and I shot up the first climb. I quickly caught up to a line of men who were slowly walking through a technical section. I knew I couldn't just wait for my turn as if I were waiting for a roller coaster, so I went all cyclo-cross on them and ran through the rocks for a long stretch until I reached the bottom. I tried putting as many riders as I could between me and the other girls. I eventually caught up to the category two women who started several minutes before me. I finished my first lap without any problems and was excited to feel that my legs were lead-free. The second lap went just as well and I didn't lose any steam. After the race, I found out that I not only won the 15-18 category, but got second in the women's category two! These were amazing results for my first race of the season and I was ready for more.
